What is A2P 10DLC registration?

A2P stands for application-to-person: software sending texts to a human on behalf of a business. 10DLC means a ten-digit long code — an ordinary local phone number. US carriers decided that business traffic sent from software over ordinary numbers has to be registered with a body called The Campaign Registry before it moves.

Registration has two parts. The brand is who you are: legal business name, tax details, website, contact information. The campaign is what you intend to send: the use case, sample messages, and how people opt in. Carriers use this to decide whether to trust your traffic, and they filter traffic that is unregistered or that behaves badly.

The system exists for a reason. Spam over local numbers got bad enough that carriers wanted names attached to traffic. For a big brand sending appointment reminders at scale, it works fine. For a plumber who wants customers to text one number, it is a lot of process for not much message.

Why does GoHighLevel's default route require it?

Why do A2P registrations get rejected?

Rejections are common, and they usually come down to details rather than intent. The usual failure points:

• Business details that do not exactly match official records — a trading name where the registry wants the legal name, or a tax ID typo.
• A thin, broken, or missing website, or one with no privacy policy covering SMS.
• Vague campaign descriptions, or sample messages that do not match the stated use case.
• Sole proprietors and very small businesses, who have less paper trail to verify.

When a registration bounces, you fix what you think the problem was and resubmit. There is no committed turnaround, each round can take days or weeks, and you cannot text while you wait. Plenty of people go two or three rounds. That waiting room is what sends most searchers to this page.

What are the legitimate ways to text without A2P?

Here is the part most articles on this topic skip. Carrier filtering does not read paperwork. It reads behaviour. A registered number that blasts gets filtered, and an unregistered number that behaves like a human keeps delivering. The registration was never the thing keeping numbers alive.

CTIA guidance — the carrier industry's own — describes what person-to-person-style traffic looks like: low throughput of roughly one message per second, limited daily volume, and a proportionate two-way conversation, meaning replies coming back at a rate that suggests real people on both ends. Stay inside that shape and your traffic reads as conversation. Step outside it — hundreds of identical messages to strangers who never respond — and your number reads as a broadcast, whatever route it rides on.

Two plain warnings. First, none of the no-A2P options is a loophole for cold blasting. Use any of them that way and the number dies; some providers will also cut you off before the carriers do. Second, consent law like the TCPA applies to business texting regardless of which provider carries the message. Skipping registration skips a form, not your legal obligations.
